Alan Cumming is no stranger to controversy.
Cumming has taken part in a new documentary Pigs Without Blankets: The Penis Movie , (now in its final weeks of funding on
Indiegogo) which was originally intended as a PSA, but has since evolved into a documentary that emphasizes some broader aspects of the issues around male circumcision.
We recently sat down with the “Good Wife” and “X2: X-Men United” star to talk about intactivism and his penis.
Gaily Grind: How have people reacted to your penis?
Alan Cumming: No complaints so far! In terms of having a foreskin, when I first came to this country people were genuinely shocked and bemused by what to do with it. Now thankfully I think people are a little more enlightened. Mostly, I think being uncircumcised is seen as something that is prized, almost fetishized, and I’m happy with that!
GG: Did you ever feel embarrassed or ashamed in a public shower situation?
AC: No. I grew up in Scotland where nobody was circumcised and as an adult, if I’m in a shower with anyone, I think they are pretty happy about the foreskin part. I know the ’embarrassed in the locker room’ angle has been used as a reason to have a child circumcised and I think that is truly awful, almost laughable. “Hey if you don’t mutilate your kid’s dick, he’ll be mocked by the other kids.” Who would buy into that? Well, lots of scared, uninformed people, apparently
GG: What’s so great about being uncircumcised?
AC: You are the way you’re supposed to be. You have a piece of skin that protects the most sensitive part of your anatomy. When it is pulled back and your head exposed your nerve endings there still exist and so you experience much more sensitivity. Also you don’t need lube to masturbate. And there’s no danger you’re going to have penis problems or suffer trauma because of a pandemic practice that you had to undergo when you were days old. Shall I go on?
GG: Why are intactivists so ardent?
AC: Well if you’re an activist about anything, I think it goes without saying you’ll be ardent. But if intactivists are more ardent than other people who believe strongly in a cause, I guess it’s because we’re talking about our dicks here! And find me a man who is not ardent about his dick! I challenge you!!
GG: Why do people who don’t do it for religious reasons, opt for circumcision?
AC: Social norms, lack of education, habit…
GG: What do you think about the effort to circumcise 27 million African men over the next 4 years?
AC: I am suspicious about a medical industry controlled by circumcised white men that benefits financially from every circumcision, dictating that the way ahead is – instead of educating people sexually or giving money to research for a cure – to advocate pandemic circumcision that will, depending on which research you read either merely slow down HIV or have no effect whatsoever. Nuff said.
