This shouldn’t come as a surprise: Samsung is working on a smart ring. A report on
Patently Mobile claims the patent application was filed way back in June. The patent application was published earlier this month by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. The patent images gives one ideas of what the smart ring could be used for.
Similar to NFC smart rings?
This is quite different from the NFC smart rings found on Chinese e-commerce stores like Aliexpress and Everbuying that work based on NFC technology. They can be used to lock and unlock your device, upload and share information and more. Some are sold as cheap as $20 a piece.
How it’s going to work
Samsung’s smart ring can be used to control smart phones, tablets, smart TVs, home appliances. The patent also reveals the ring may be used for home automation, like turning off the lights and pulling blinds. It appears this technology is somehow embedded within Samsung Gear S2 that has a rotating bezel and this ring may work in a similar, but more advanced way.
The ring will work based on rotation. As shown in the patent application, the ring will recognize clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations to perform different operations. For instance, rotating the ring in different directions may be used in changing TV channels or adjusting the volume.
It is also said that the company is trying to make the ring work with mobile social networks apps like Facebook to perform special functions.
Samsung is not the first to think of a smart ring but it’s only trying to make it different and actually “useful.” Apple, Google and Microsoft too are working on smart rings.
Since this is only a patent application, no one knows exactly when this technology will be used in consumer products. If you’re thinking this is a strange technology, it really isn’t. There’s a smart necklace already by Miraagii. Perhaps this is for those getting tired of smartwatches already
