Tech news : Microsoft Is Working On A SIM Card For Windows 10 Devices

It appears Microsoft is working on its own SIM card for Windows 10 devices. A new app spotted by The Verge at the Windows Store even indicates that the SIM card might be going through the testing stage already. This is going to be a contract-less plan and customers will be able to pay for cellular data using only their Microsoft accounts.

Although Microsoft is yet to officially announce this, the published application called Cellular Data reveals much about the plan. The description reads:

“ The Cellular data app allows you to connect to a trusted nationwide mobile data network using only your Microsoft account. Connect with – and pay for – a mobile data plan on your Windows 10 device using only your Microsoft account information. That means no fixed contract and no long term commitments to a mobile network operator.

Microsoft is likely to partner with mobile network operators to create its own virtual network and it looks like cellular data plans will be tied to users’ Microsoft account. This means plans will be sold through the Windows Store.

This app might be there just for testing but the mention of a “Microsoft SIM card” as a requirement makes it a bit more intriguing. Right now, we do not know if this is going to be exclusive to the US or if Microsoft plans to roll out the SIM card globally. Also, it’s not clear how soon Microsoft plans to implement the plan and which devices are supported.

Since there’s no official statement directly from Microsoft about this, we may just have to wait for a little while. We will publish an update as soon as more details are revealed.
